Ahhh… I just want some peace!
Ahhh… I just want to be happy.
Ahhh… I just want to stop feeling like it’s all such a struggle…
What do you truly treasure? What do you hold most dear?
You might answer:
family, my children, my pet, my career, my health, my home, my community…
Peel off another layer and ask yourself:
why do I hold that (my family, my health etc.) so dear? What does that represent to me?
what is the experience beneath that, which makes it so dear?
The answer to this might be:
love, peace, connection, joy, sense of being valued.
WHEN WHAT WE WANT SEEMS ELUSIVE
Often the states we value above all else seem elusive: love, peace, joy… They remain elusive if we chase them, but they’re right there within us crying out for attention, if we just stop and notice.
We forget that the things we most value, we can nurture and protect. The protecting has to happen inside us before we can experience them in our outer world. In fact, these states are only inside us. The more we practise them, the more we’ll experience them. They’re not caused by anything outside of ourselves, though it may seem that way.
TANGIBLE EXAMPLES
Peace
Let’s take a look at some more tangible examples. Let’s say you value and treasure peace, and yet it seems distant and unattainable.
Do you actually ever stop and allow yourself to feel it?
Do you plan space in your day to allow it?
Do you avoid multitasking so you can experience it?
Do you refuse the tempting busy-ness of your mind and stay present in your body?
Do you appreciate the moment or ruminate on past situations and future imagined concerns?
… and then wonder why you feel no peace?
Do you see how we forget the power we have to experience peace? We just need to commit to it and give it the value it deserves.
Love
Let’s say you treasure the feeling of love.
Do you treat yourself with love?
Do you make time to connect with your heart centre?
Do you express love to yourself and others?
Do you refuse the tempting busy-ness of your mind and connect with the feeling inside you?
Do you, in any situation, ask yourself what the most loving course of action would be?
Do you allow tendencies in yourself which are less than loving (patient, kind, non-judgemental, tolerant)?
… and then wonder why your life feels devoid of love?
Do you see how we forget the power we have to experience love? We just need to commit to it and give it the value it deserves.
If you truly value these states and feelings, your commitment to them as a way of being will be apparent. The more you practise them, the easier they will be to experience. The more you protect them, the sooner they will become your natural state, irrelevant of what’s happening in your everyday reality.
They’re INSIDE us. They’re not something you can search for and find in your outer life unless you have found them in yourself first.
So, what do you most value?
YOUR DECISION
This decision could change the whole course of your life.
Do you choose to commit to what you hold most dear?
Do you choose to protect it and nurture it within yourself?
Do you choose to reject that which undermines it?
If you do, there will be some comfortable old ways of being, relationships, habits you’ll need to discard. I encourage you with all my heart to let go of the things that don’t serve you, and embrace those aligned with your Treasure. Become a living expression of the state you value.
